Chances are that, by now, you’ve made it back to school, but it’s been a hard adjustment. After having so much free time to travel, catch up on your reading list, hang out with friends, and — let’s be real — watch Netflix for hours on end, writing papers and cracking open a textbook to cram for an exam is not an easy feat. Returning to a rigorous work and study schedule definitely takes a toll on your free spirit.
That being said, what really sucks about going back to school? These twelve very real struggles!
1. Returning to a normal sleep schedule.

Over the summer you took naps whenever you wanted, and stayed out as late as curfew allowed. Now you have to wake up at a disgustingly early hour, which will only leave you to falling asleep in class for the first few weeks.
2. Having to go back to staying inside when it’s still nice out.

It’s hard to feel like you should be doing work, when it’s sunny and warm outside. You start hoping for the fall to come not only because of pumpkin-flavored treats and apple picking, but because it will make you feel a little less suffocated for being stuck in a classroom all day.
3. Rushing to complete the summer assignments you’ve been putting off for months.

Yes, it would have been easier to start them at the being of the summer but, sorry, you were too busy living it up! Now you’re trying to quickly catch up and get as much help as you can so you don’t start the academic year off on the wrong foot.
4. Or just not doing the reading at all and having to pretend like you did.

Instead of reading the book over the summer, you read the Wikipedia page right before class. You try to participate in class as much as you can without getting a dirty look from your teacher, but it’s hard to fake enthusiasm.
5. Hearing about how everyone’s vacation was soooo much better than yours.

Not only have you seen the pictures all over Snapchat and Instagram, but you have to hear about them too? You try to pretend like it doesn’t get under your skin. But if you were working all summer or just stayed at home, then you secretly feel a tad jealous. Your friends beat the heat splashing around on the beach while you were stuck at home marathoning your favorite shows? The agony!
6. Seeing all the annoying people you happily avoided over the summer.

Fact: You don’t like everyone you go to school with. So it’s really nice to take a break from them and spend time with only the people who don’t make you gag every time you talk to them. But when school is back on, so are the awkward conversations and the forced nodding and smiling. Being able to tolerant idiots and have to sit in a desk right across from them is harder than it looks!
7. When your teachers have zero chill and decide to load you up with course work right away.

Some teachers think jumping right into work is the best way to get students to snap out of their summer laziness. They mean well — they’re just trying to give you the best education possible — but, for most of us, this isn’t the right solution. So when it happens you feel railroaded and just not prepared at all, you tend to get stressed out. It’s like, ‘Excuse me, but this is the first day of classes — perhaps we should get to know each other’s names before you assign a 12-page paper on Dostoyevsky, okay? Thanks!
8. Still in the process of getting adjusted and then having to worry about acing your tryouts on top of that.

The beginning of the year can be pretty stressful if you want to participate in extracurricular activities. Instead of just skating by, you’re spending more time at school trying to audition for whatever club or sport you want to join. It can be nerve wracking until you know whether you made it or not.
9. Having to go back to school before some of your other friends that go to a different school.

Sadly not everyone reports back to duty at the same time. If you’re one of the people who is going back earlier, then you’re going to get serious FOMO and wonder what you’re friends are doing with their extra days or week.
10. The food situation.

Going from eating ice cream in your living room to noshing on gross cafeteria food or brown bagging a lunch that will preferably not spoil and cause your lock to reek? It’s rough. Plus you can’t snack whenever hunger strikes, so there’s that to look forward to.
11. Moving into a new dorm or apartment and having to readjust all over again.

If you’re in college or attend a boarding school, then a strict class schedule isn’t the only thing you’re struggling with. Moving in and getting to know your new roommate could be mentally and physically draining. Hopefully it will all work out!
12. And let’s face it, there’s the “clothes situation” to worry about.

Sure, shopping for new fall styles and actually making an attempt to look presentable is a good thing. In fact, it can be downright fun! Still, it takes a toll on your budget, and you can’t help but miss hanging out in your comfy pajamas or sweats all day long. Now it’s either a bland uniform or attire that’s deemed “appropriate” by administrative officials. Help!
